MS polymer

The modern all-rounder for outdoor and flexible joints: strong, weatherproof, paintable, and it sticks to almost everything without a primer.

Also sold as Hybrid polymer, silane modified polymer, SMP, hybrid sealant adhesive.

MS polymer, hybrid polymer and SMP usually mean a one-part silane-terminated polymer adhesive or adhesive sealant. Moisture from the air and surfaces triggers crosslinking. A skin forms first, then cure moves inward at only a few millimetres per day. A thick sealed bead can therefore remain uncured in the centre long after the outside feels firm. Do not judge full cure by touching the surface.

The cured material is rubbery rather than hard. It handles movement, vibration and different rates of expansion better than ordinary rigid epoxy or cyanoacrylate. It also shrinks less than a solvent-borne adhesive because cure is not mainly the loss of a large solvent fraction. Many grades bond common building materials with little or no primer and tolerate a slightly damp surface. They are useful for skirting, panels, vehicle trim, coated metal, timber, masonry and sealing joints that also carry a modest load. High-tack products can support light parts immediately, but heavy or springy parts still need temporary support. PE, PP and PTFE remain poor substrates for typical grades. Copper, bitumen, natural stone, plastics prone to stress cracking and permanently submerged joints need the exact product guidance. Strength, cure speed, paint compatibility and food-area approval are product dependent.

What it is for

Flexible bonding and sealing in building work; skirting, panels, trims and profiles; bonding coated metal, timber, masonry, ceramic and many rigid plastics; vehicle and container joints; exterior joints that move; jobs where a cartridge adhesive must bridge an uneven surface without becoming rigid.

Where it falls down

It cures from the outside inward, so a deep bead between two non-porous sheets can stay soft for days. It is not a substitute for a structural fastener where the load is high or safety critical. Typical grades do not bond PE, PP or PTFE. Some are incompatible with bitumen, copper alloys or certain plastics. Paint can crack over a moving joint even when it sticks. Continuous immersion, natural-stone staining and aquarium use require a specifically approved product.

Getting a good bond

The surface must be sound, clean and free of dust, grease, release agent and loose paint. Many grades accept dry or slightly damp mineral surfaces, but standing water is not acceptable. Remove plastic films and mould-release residue. Use the manufacturer's cleaner, activator or primer when its substrate chart requires one. Apply beads so air and moisture can reach the adhesive rather than trapping one solid bed between impermeable sheets. Press firmly and support heavy parts until sufficient cure has developed. Make a compatibility test on coated, plastic or stain-prone surfaces.

Safety

Do not assume that an isocyanate-free hybrid has no relevant hazard. The current representative SDS is not classified as a hazardous mixture, but it carries EUH208 because trimethoxyvinylsilane may produce an allergic reaction. It also warns that spraying can form hazardous respirable droplets and says not to breathe spray or mist. Other MS polymer formulations use different silanes, catalysts and plasticisers, so read the exact SDS. Ventilate during application and cure. Avoid skin contamination. Do not clean your skin with solvent. Once cured, these products normally require mechanical removal.
