Gluing Powder coated metal
Powder coated garden furniture, radiators, bike frames and shopfittings.
Also called powder coating, powdercoat.
How Powder coated metal behaves when you bond it
A tougher and better-adhered finish than wet paint, so the coating itself is rarely the weak link. It is also deliberately low-energy and smooth, so a light key transforms adhesion.
Powder-coated metal is a composite surface: a cured polymer coating over metal. Chemistry, texture, cure and contamination vary, and the joint cannot be stronger than the coating-to-metal interface even when adhesive wetting is excellent.

Surface preparation
Identify the coating and confirm that it is firmly attached. Wash, rinse and dry; remove polish or oil with a compatible cleaner. Lightly abrade a hidden bond area to a uniform matt finish if allowed, then clean again. For structural loads, test whether coating removal to bare prepared metal is required.
Which adhesives work on Powder coated metal
Good
Acrylic foam tape, VHB type
Acrylic foam tape, VHB type is rated good for this material as an application-level assessment, not as a blanket manufacturer claim. The prepared surface must be sound and consistently keyed where the finish permits. Suitability still depends on the other substrate, joint design and service environment.
Abrade the surface first.
Good
MS polymer
MS polymer is rated good for this material as an application-level assessment, not as a blanket manufacturer claim. The prepared surface must be sound and consistently keyed where the finish permits. Suitability still depends on the other substrate, joint design and service environment.
Abrade the surface first.
Conditional
Two-part epoxy
Two-part epoxy is rated conditional for this material as an application-level assessment, not as a blanket manufacturer claim. The prepared surface must be sound and consistently keyed where the finish permits. Use only after a product-specific test on the actual grade and joint.
Abrade the surface first.
