Gluing Painted metal

Any metal with a paint finish, from car panels to radiators and garden gates.

Also called car body panel, coated metal, painted steel.

How Painted metal behaves when you bond it

The joint is only ever as strong as the paint's grip on the metal, so a strong adhesive on weak paint simply peels the paint off. Some solvent-based adhesives also soften or lift the paint before they cure.

Painted metal exposes cured paint rather than metal. Paint chemistry, age and adhesion control the joint, and solvents can soften or lift some coatings; failure may occur cleanly at the paint-to-metal boundary.

Surface preparation

Check coating adhesion and solvent resistance on a hidden area. Clean, lightly key sound paint and remove dust. The 3M structural-preparation bulletin notes that paint may need removal where its adhesion limits joint strength. Strip weak or flaking paint and prepare the bare metal for structural work.

Which adhesives work on Painted metal

Good

Acrylic foam tape, VHB type

Acrylic foam tape, VHB type is rated good for this material as an application-level assessment, not as a blanket manufacturer claim. The prepared surface must be sound and consistently keyed where the finish permits. Suitability still depends on the other substrate, joint design and service environment.

Abrade the surface first.

Good

MS polymer

MS polymer is rated good for this material as an application-level assessment, not as a blanket manufacturer claim. The prepared surface must be sound and consistently keyed where the finish permits. Suitability still depends on the other substrate, joint design and service environment.

Abrade the surface first.

Conditional

Two-part epoxy

Two-part epoxy is rated conditional for this material as an application-level assessment, not as a blanket manufacturer claim. The prepared surface must be sound and consistently keyed where the finish permits. Use only after a product-specific test on the actual grade and joint.

Abrade the surface first.
