Gluing EPS (polystyrene foam)

White bead foam used for packaging, insulation board and model making.

Also called beadboard, EPS, expanded polystyrene, packing foam, Styrofoam.

How EPS (polystyrene foam) behaves when you bond it

Dissolved instantly by solvent-based adhesives, which is the single most common mistake made with it. Water-based and solvent-free products marked as polystyrene-safe are the only reliable route.

EPS is a rigid bead foam made from expanded polystyrene. The bead surface is solvent-sensitive and the material has low cohesive and peel strength, so a bond may remain attached while tearing beads from the panel.

Surface preparation

Brush or vacuum loose beads and dust without crushing the face. 3M warns that solvent-based all-purpose adhesives dissolve rigid polystyrene foam; use a foam-safe dispersion, low-melt or other product whose data sheet names EPS. Apply broadly and press lightly to spread load.

Which adhesives work on EPS (polystyrene foam)

Good

Grab adhesive, no-nails

Grab adhesive, no-nails is rated good for this material as an application-level assessment, not as a blanket manufacturer claim. Suitability still depends on the other substrate, joint design and service environment.

Good

Spray adhesive

Spray adhesive is rated good for this material as an application-level assessment, not as a blanket manufacturer claim. Suitability still depends on the other substrate, joint design and service environment.

Conditional

Hot melt, hot glue

Hot melt, hot glue is rated conditional for this material as an application-level assessment, not as a blanket manufacturer claim. Use only after a product-specific test on the actual grade and joint.
