Grab adhesive, no-nails

Cartridge adhesive for fixing things to walls: high initial grab, generous gap filling, and no clamping needed.

Also sold as no-nails adhesive, construction adhesive, panel adhesive, cartridge adhesive.

Grab adhesive is a job category, not one chemistry. Products sold under the name may be solvent-based rubber or resin adhesives, water-based dispersions, moisture-curing hybrid polymers or polyurethane foams. The common feature is a thick, non-slump bead with high initial tack for fixing trim and panels. The cure mechanism, odour, water resistance and safe substrates therefore vary too widely for one family value. Read the cartridge rather than assuming all no-nails products behave alike. Solvented grades often grab quickly and can bond one non-porous face, but bring flammable vapour and may attack foams or plastics. Water-based grades need at least one porous face so water can escape. Hybrid polymer grades can bond a wider mix of porous and non-porous materials and remain flexible, but cure through moisture and can be slow in a deep, sealed bead. Use beads with air or moisture access, press firmly to wet the surfaces, and support heavy items for the stated time. Grab adhesive is appropriate for skirting, architrave, battens, wall panels and similar building components. It is not permission to hang a dangerous overhead load without mechanical restraint. Mirrors, natural stone, polystyrene and plasticised vinyl need a formula that explicitly lists them because staining, solvent attack and plasticiser migration are common failures.

What it is for

Fixing skirting, architrave, dado rail, battens, carpet gripper, wall panels and decorative trim; bonding timber or plasterboard to sound masonry; jobs where a cartridge bead must bridge moderate surface unevenness.

Where it falls down

The name does not define the chemistry. Solvented products can damage foam and some plastics. Water-based products dry badly between two sealed faces. Hybrid grades may not bond polyethylene, polypropylene or PTFE. Heavy, overhead and safety-critical items still need support or mechanical fixings. Weak paint, friable plaster and dusty masonry fail before the adhesive does.

Getting a good bond

Remove dust, grease, loose paint and friable plaster. Let new plaster and concrete dry unless the product permits damp work. Prime dusty porous surfaces only with the primer system named by the maker. Apply beads that allow cure rather than covering the whole face with a sealed film. Press firmly, adjust within the open time and support weight until handling strength is reached.

Safety

The SDS depends on the chemistry. Solvented grab adhesives can be highly flammable, cause serious eye irritation and cause drowsiness or dizziness. Vapour can collect near floors and ignite at a distant spark. Polyurethane foam grades contain isocyanates. Water-based and hybrid grades may have lower vapour hazards but can still contain sensitisers. Check the exact cartridge SDS before choosing ventilation and gloves.
