Doable with the right adhesive

How to glue Plasterboard to Cork

The short answer

For lightweight decorative cork on sound indoor plasterboard, use a water-based grab or cork adhesive whose documentation covers cork and a porous wall background. EVO-STIK Gripfill Solvent Free explicitly lists both cork and plasterboard among its bonded substrates and is a genuine UK retail product, but the exact combination is not presented as a tested pair, so this remains a conditional recommendation. Do not use adhesive alone for load-bearing items because the paper face or coating can detach before the adhesive does.

Why this bond behaves the way it does

Cork and the sound paper face are porous, so a water-based paste can dry and spread load over a broad area. Bostik lists each substrate and gives wall-panel instructions; Soudal independently documents cork coverings on porous plaster backgrounds. The interface and any paint or skim coat still need a representative test.

What to use

Best choice

Grab adhesive, no-nails

A water-based high-grab paste is the best-supported indoor route because Bostik Mount It lists both cork and plasterboard and provides wall-panel instructions. Exact-pair performance remains an inference.

Primer: Use the selected product maker's specified primer on porous or friable backgrounds.

Gaps: Use broad, controlled beads or a full spread as the chosen system specifies; do not bridge large unsupported voids.

Curing: Support as needed and allow at least the documented porous-surface drying period.

Watch out: Not structural and not for meaningful overhead or cantilever loads.

Also works

Contact adhesive

A named contact system can suit sealed or pre-painted cork that cannot use water-based paste, but the exact product must explicitly permit both the cork finish and plasterboard face.

Primer: Do not improvise primer or thinner.

Gaps: Contact adhesive needs intimate, broadly supported contact and is not a void filler.

Curing: Position accurately because contact bonds usually cannot be adjusted.

Watch out: 3M Fastbond 30NF is specifically not recommended for drywall laminating.

Only in some cases

Spray adhesive

A manufacturer-listed cork/drywall spray can work for very light coverings, but overspray, weak paint, and limited gap filling make it a secondary route.

Gaps: No meaningful gap fill.

Curing: Apply pressure over the whole area.

Watch out: Do not infer suitability from a generic aerosol label.

Avoid

Hot melt, hot glue

Small hot-melt spots concentrate peel in the cork and paper face and do not provide the broad supported bond needed by tiles or sheets.

Gaps: Apparent bulk does not make this a reliable broad-area filler.

Watch out: Inferred family-level caution; an exact engineered system could be assessed separately.

What to avoid

Avoid bonding over loose paint, torn paper, damp board, dust, or friable skim. Do not substitute 3M Fastbond 30NF for this use: its own TDS says it is not recommended for drywall laminating. Avoid small hot-melt spots for full tiles because they concentrate peel and can telegraph through thin cork.

Preparing the surfaces

Plasterboard

Confirm the plasterboard paper, paint, or skim is firmly attached. Keep it dry; remove dust, grease, loose paint, and torn paper. Prime a porous or friable face only with the primer specified by the selected adhesive system.

Cork

Acclimatise and dry the cork. Remove surface dust without soaking it. For pre-painted or sealed cork, check that a water-based adhesive is permitted and coupon-test because the finish may prevent drying or adhesion.

How to do it

For Bostik Mount It, apply short discontinuous beads as its wall-panel instructions specify, place the cork immediately, press evenly, and support if needed. For a full-spread cork adhesive, use the named notched trowel and rolling method instead; do not mix application rules between products.

Working, clamping and cure times

Bostik states approximately 24 hours for porous surfaces. Keep the tile unloaded and supported as needed during that period; colder or less porous assemblies can take longer.

If the conditions are harder

ConditionVerdictNotes
Outdoor use Does not work Although Mount It mentions exterior use, the cited evidence does not establish an exterior plasterboard/cork wall system, edge sealing, freeze-thaw performance, or durable weather exposure.
Water and wet areas Does not work Bostik excludes continuous immersion, while wet plasterboard paper and cork can weaken or move. No complete wet-area system is documented for this pair.
Heat and cold Works with care Mount It lists a -10 to 50 C service range, but the exact assembly and decorative cork finish are not tested; remain within the lower limit of every component.
Structural or high load Does not work The product TDS excludes structural use and heavy objects on weak surfaces; the plasterboard facing is the limiting layer.

This advice is for lightweight cork wall covering, not shelving, acoustic panels with meaningful mass, overhead work, fire-rated assemblies, or safety-critical loads.

Products that fit

Ordered by how well they suit this specific job. Nothing is ranked by what it pays.

Bostik Bostik Mount It

Grab adhesive, no-nails

The TDS explicitly lists both cork and plasterboard, but exact-pair performance still requires a wall-face coupon test.

Bostik EVO-STIK Gripfill Solvent Free

Grab adhesive, no-nails

Manufacturer TDS explicitly lists both plasterboard and cork among bonded substrates, and it is a gap-filling grab adhesive suited to an uneven cork-on-plasterboard joint; confirmed for sale on Amazon UK.

Soudal Soudal Cork Adhesive

Grab adhesive, no-nails

Directly documented for cork on porous plaster backgrounds; plasterboard compatibility is conditional on its sound porous face.
