Gluing EVA foam
Closed cell foam used for craft and cosplay work, gym mats, packaging and shoe soles.
Also called cosplay foam, craft foam, EVA, gym mat foam.
How EVA foam behaves when you bond it
Closed cell so adhesive sits on the surface rather than soaking in, and strong solvents melt it on contact. Contact adhesive is the usual choice because it bonds instantly across the whole face without soaking or crushing the foam.
EVA foam is a flexible closed-cell copolymer foam with a low-energy skin. Density, mould-release residue and whether the surface is cut, slit or moulded have a large effect on adhesion, while a rigid or solvent-aggressive bond can tear or distort the foam.
Material properties
- Surface energy
- Low, which is what makes it hard to bond
- Porosity
- Semi-porous
- Rigidity
- Flexible
- Maximum service temperature
- 60C
- Normally needs abrading
- Yes
- Normally needs a primer
- Yes
- Solvent sensitive
- Yes. Solvent-based adhesives can craze or dissolve the surface.
- Requires surface treatment
- (Bostik EVA/6 contact-adhesive system specifies thoroughly roughened EVA plus its named primer; moulded soles may require an additional named primer.) Manufacturer verified
Surface preparation
Identify the foam grade and test an offcut. Bostik specifies clean, dry, thoroughly roughened EVA for its EVA/6 primer/contact-adhesive system; dust off after abrasion, prime evenly and observe the stated drying window. Moulded sole material may need the additional named primer rather than abrasion alone.
Which adhesives work on EVA foam
Good
Contact adhesive
Contact adhesive is rated good for this material as an application-level assessment, not as a blanket manufacturer claim. The prepared surface must be sound and consistently keyed where the finish permits. A named primer, LSE formulation or controlled surface treatment may be essential. Suitability still depends on the other substrate, joint design and service environment.
Abrade the surface first. A primer or activator is needed.

Conditional
Hot melt, hot glue
Hot melt, hot glue is rated conditional for this material as an application-level assessment, not as a blanket manufacturer claim. The prepared surface must be sound and consistently keyed where the finish permits. A named primer, LSE formulation or controlled surface treatment may be essential. Use only after a product-specific test on the actual grade and joint.
Abrade the surface first.
