How to glue Painted metal to EVA foam

The short answer

For Painted metal to EVA foam, start with a high-tack acrylic transfer tape such as 3M 9775WL+ on clean, lightly keyed EVA and a properly prepared metal face. 3M publishes EVA-foam performance and separately recommends 9775WL in foam-to-steel/aluminium selection guidance, but it does not publish an exact test for this painted metal pair; the recommendation is therefore confidence C. A primed contact-adhesive system is the main alternative for flexible or contoured work.

Why this bond behaves the way it does

EVA is closed-cell and comparatively difficult to wet; mould-release residue and low-energy formulations can cause peel. Bostik’s EVA/6 document requires a clean, dry, thoroughly roughened EVA face and primer for its named contact systems. 3M’s 9775WL literature supplies direct EVA data and separate metal-side evidence, which must not be merged into an A-grade exact-pair claim.

What to use

Best choice

Acrylic foam tape, VHB type

9775WL+ provides a thin, flexible, broadly distributed bond; 3M publishes EVA-foam data and a foam-to-metal selection matrix, though not an exact pair test.

Watch out: Confidence C: foam chemistry is directly documented, but the exact metal grade or finish is not directly tested as a pair.

Also works

Contact adhesive

A contact system is appropriate for flexible or contoured EVA when the exact adhesive and EVA primer are specified and available; Bostik requires roughening and EVA/6 primer for its named systems.

Watch out: Do not transfer another product’s substrate or environmental claims to this family.

Only in some cases

Spray adhesive

A foam-rated spray can cover large areas, but 3M Foam Fast 74 names urethane/latex rather than EVA, so use only after the manufacturer confirms the EVA grade and a coupon passes.

Watch out: Do not transfer another product’s substrate or environmental claims to this family.

Not suitable

Solvent cement

Solvent cement is formulated to dissolve or weld selected thermoplastics and has no evidence for making a safe, durable metal-to-foam bond here.

Watch out: It may irreversibly attack the foam. Do not experiment on the finished part.

What to avoid

Avoid solvent cement, untested strong solvent cleaners, and generic superglue/contact products that do not name EVA or require an unavailable primer. Avoid touching cleaned metal, trapping dust, crushing the foam with a clamp or assuming a coating is better bonded to the metal than the adhesive is to the coating.

Preparing the surfaces

Painted metal

Check coating adhesion and solvent resistance on a hidden area. Clean, lightly key sound paint and remove dust. The 3M structural-preparation bulletin notes that paint may need removal where its adhesion limits joint strength. Strip weak or flaking paint and prepare the bare metal for structural work. Use the cited preparation as a starting point, but follow the chosen adhesive manufacturer's instructions and test the actual batch/finish. Avoid industrial acid or caustic etches unless a controlled, qualified process and safety system are in place.

EVA foam

Identify the foam grade and test an offcut. Bostik specifies clean, dry, thoroughly roughened EVA for its EVA/6 primer/contact-adhesive system; dust off after abrasion, prime evenly and observe the stated drying window. Moulded sole material may need the additional named primer rather than abrasion alone. Do not substitute an aggressive cleaner: test an offcut and stop if the foam softens, swells or loses its skin.

How to do it

1. Confirm that the foam is EVA and trial peel/solvent behaviour on an offcut. 2. Prepare the metal for the selected tape or adhesive. 3. Lightly abrade the EVA with clean emery cloth, remove dust and apply the specified primer if using a contact system. 4. For 9775WL+, laminate tape to the EVA with uniform roll pressure, remove the liner and press onto the metal without stretching the foam. 5. Roll firmly and hold flat while bond strength builds.

Working, clamping and cure times

3M says 9775WL+ reaches full adhesion in 48–72 hours. Bostik’s EVA/6 system guidance reports high strength after 24 hours and final strength up to seven days, but that timing belongs to its named primer/contact systems and must not be transferred to other products.

If the conditions are harder

ConditionVerdictNotes
Outdoor use Works with care Use the 9775WL+ route: 3M documents UV and humidity resistance. Shield edges and validate the actual metal coating and EVA grade. This does not make every acrylic tape suitable outdoors.
Water and wet areas Works with care 3M states good water and humidity resistance for 9775WL+, not continuous immersion. Keep edges sealed and do not upgrade this to waterproof.
Heat and cold Works with care 9775WL+ is listed up to 121°C, but the EVA foam—not the adhesive—will usually set the assembly limit. Validate at the lowest verified substrate/product limit and include thermal cycling.

EVA grades vary materially. Primer, solvent and adhesive compatibility must be tested. The published sources do not establish a structural load rating for any exact metal/EVA pair in this pack.
