Gluing EPDM

Weather-resistant rubber used for roofing membrane, seals and pond liners.

Also called door seal rubber, EPDM rubber, roofing rubber.

How EPDM behaves when you bond it

Reliable EPDM bonding depends on the adhesive system. Permabond identifies specific cyanoacrylate and TA46xx structural acrylic products that bond EPDM without primer, but this does not make every product in those families suitable. Roofing and liner work should follow the membrane maker's named cleaner, primer and adhesive system.

EPDM is an ethylene-propylene-diene elastomer valued for weather and water resistance. Its low-energy, non-polar surface is difficult for many general-purpose adhesives to wet and anchor to. Roofing membrane, moulded seals and pond liner can also carry talc, release agent or weathered surface contamination.

Surface preparation

Keep the surface clean, dry and free of release agent. Permabond specifies isopropanol or Permabond Cleaner A to remove release agent and warns that acetone can attack EPDM. Use the cleaner, primer and flash-off time named by the selected adhesive or membrane system. Do not substitute a generic solvent or omit a specified primer because a different product claims primerless bonding.

Which adhesives work on EPDM

Excellent

Structural acrylic

Permabond directly states that TA4605 and TA4610 bond EPDM without primer or surface treatment. This rating is confined to structural acrylics formulated for low-energy substrates, not every acrylic adhesive.

Good

Cyanoacrylate

Permabond identifies 105 cyanoacrylate for EPDM. It suits small, close-fitting joints, but its stated poor resistance to polar solvents makes it a cautious choice for wet service.

Conditional

Contact adhesive

Contact systems can suit large membrane overlaps only when they are named by the EPDM membrane maker. A generic contact adhesive may not wet the low-energy surface or tolerate standing water and weathering.

A primer or activator is needed.
