Doable with the right adhesive

How to glue Brass to Polyurethane foam

The short answer

For Brass to flexible polyurethane foam, use a foam-specific spray such as 3M Foam Fast 74 for dry interior lamination. 3M directly names flexible urethane foam and generic metal, but not the exact brass finish, so validate a coupon. Where a clean, thin bond and better published humidity/UV resistance are needed, 3M 9775WL+ transfer tape is an alternative; Soudabond Easy applies to polyurethane insulation panels rather than every soft PU foam.

Why this bond behaves the way it does

Open-cell PU foam can absorb a runny adhesive and stiffen, while excess solvent or pressure can damage cells. A soft spray line or thin pressure-sensitive acrylic spreads load. Manufacturer sources directly identify urethane/PU foam classes but generally say only “metal”, so the exact pair remains an inference.

What to use

Best choice

Spray adhesive

Foam Fast 74 is specifically documented for flexible urethane foam to materials including metal and maintains a soft, non-dimpling bond line.

Watch out: Confidence C: foam chemistry is directly documented, but the exact metal grade or finish is not directly tested as a pair.

Also works

Acrylic foam tape, VHB type

3M 9775WL+ has published PU-foam data and strong environmental resistance, but requires smooth mating surfaces and careful lamination.

Watch out: Do not transfer another product’s substrate or environmental claims to this family.

Only in some cases

Polyurethane adhesive

Soudabond Easy is suitable for polyurethane insulation panels and aluminium/steel building substrates; use only for rigid-panel grades after a representative test.

Watch out: Do not transfer another product’s substrate or environmental claims to this family.

Not suitable

Solvent cement

Solvent cement is formulated to dissolve or weld selected thermoplastics and has no evidence for making a safe, durable metal-to-foam bond here.

Watch out: It may irreversibly attack the foam. Do not experiment on the finished part.

What to avoid

Avoid solvent cement, untested hot melt, heavy brittle blobs and flooding the foam with liquid adhesive. Do not assume that a product for rigid PU/PIR insulation is suitable for soft upholstery foam, or that Foam Fast 74 has outdoor/immersion approval.

Preparing the surfaces

Brass

Test for lacquer and decide whether it must remain. Degrease, remove tarnish and lightly abrade bare brass to a uniform fresh finish, using non-ferrous abrasive media; clean again and bond promptly. If bonding to sound lacquer is unavoidable, test both adhesive-to-lacquer and lacquer-to-metal strength. Use the cited preparation as a starting point, but follow the chosen adhesive manufacturer's instructions and test the actual batch/finish. Avoid industrial acid or caustic etches unless a controlled, qualified process and safety system are in place.

Polyurethane foam

Use clean, dry foam with no friable skin. Brush or vacuum loose particles without compressing the cells. Choose a foam-rated spray, dispersion or low-temperature system and apply the minimum uniform coat needed. Test solvent and heat compatibility on an offcut and use broad, light pressure. Do not substitute an aggressive cleaner: test an offcut and stop if the foam softens, swells or loses its skin.

How to do it

1. Identify whether the PU foam is flexible upholstery foam or a rigid insulation panel. 2. Test solvent and peel behaviour on offcuts. 3. Prepare the metal and remove loose foam particles. 4. For Foam Fast 74, spray the minimum even lace coat and assemble in the manufacturer window; for 9775WL+, laminate with uniform roll pressure. 5. Support the assembly without crushing the cells and allow the specified bond build.

Working, clamping and cure times

Foam Fast 74 is fast-tacking, but the cited documents do not establish a universal full-cure time. 9775WL+ develops full adhesion over 48–72 hours. Soudabond Easy reaches about 12-hour full strength for the specified adhesive-foam application.

If the conditions are harder

ConditionVerdictNotes
Outdoor use Works with care Foam Fast 74 has no cited outdoor claim. Outdoor use is only conditionally supported with the environmentally resistant 9775WL+ route or protected Soudabond Easy; Soudabond Easy itself is not UV resistant.
Water and wet areas Works with care 3M 9775WL+ has good water/humidity resistance; Soudabond Easy is water resistant but explicitly not watertight. Foam Fast 74 has no cited wet-service claim.
Heat and cold Works with care Foam Fast 74 lists 77°C heat resistance; 9775WL+ lists 121°C and Soudabond Easy −40°C to +90°C. The PU foam grade and the exact metal/foam movement set the lower assembly limit.

Use only with adequate ventilation and current SDS controls. The foam may fail cohesively before the glue line. Outdoor or wet use needs the 9775WL+ or protected Soudabond evidence; do not transfer those claims to Foam Fast 74.
