How to glue a PLA 3D print to an MDF base
Two-part epoxy bonds PLA to MDF reliably. The two things that matter are keying the print's smooth bottom layer and sealing the MDF so it does not absorb the resin.
The short answer
Abrade the print's base, seal the MDF with a thin skim of epoxy, and bond with a fresh mix once the skim goes tacky. A 3D print's first layer comes off the build plate glassy smooth and often carries residue from glue stick, hairspray or a PEI sheet, all of which stop adhesive gripping. A pass with 180 grit and a wipe with alcohol removes it.

- Two-part epoxy, 180 grit abrasive, isopropyl alcohol, masking tape, pencil, mixing card, gloves
PLA is one of the easier print materials to bond because it is polar enough for most adhesives to wet. What catches people out is not the plastic but the surface. The bottom face, which is usually the one you want to glue, is the smoothest part of the whole print and it has been pressed against a build surface treated with something designed to release. Abrading it is the single most useful step.
MDF's problem is absorption. The face is moderately thirsty and a cut edge is very thirsty, so a sealing coat of epoxy makes a real difference to the amount of adhesive left doing work in the joint.
Epoxy suits this pairing better than cyanoacrylate for two reasons. It fills the small gaps left by print warp or an uneven MDF face, and it does not shock-fail the way cyanoacrylate does if the display piece gets knocked.
One limit worth knowing: PLA softens at a low temperature, around 60 degrees, so do not use a heat source to speed the epoxy cure and do not put the finished piece in a car or a sunny window.
Step by step
- Dry fit the print and pencil round it on the MDF.
- Abrade the print's base with 180 grit until the gloss is gone, then wipe with isopropyl alcohol.
- Sand the MDF inside the pencil line with 180 grit and dust it off.
- Mix a little epoxy and brush a thin sealing coat onto the MDF only.
- Wait until the sealing coat is tacky, usually 20 to 40 minutes.
- Mix fresh epoxy and spread a thin layer on the print's base.
- Press it into place, twist a couple of millimetres to expel air, and align to the pencil line.
- Support it so it cannot slide and leave 24 hours at room temperature.
What to avoid
Do not glue the unsanded first layer. Build plate residue is a release agent.
Do not warm the joint to speed the cure. PLA softens at a lower temperature than most people expect.
Do not glue onto bare cut MDF edges without sealing them. They absorb far more than the face.
MDF dust is a respiratory irritant, so wear a mask when sanding. Uncured epoxy irritates skin. PLA is not suitable for anything that will live in a car, a conservatory or direct summer sun, whatever adhesive you use.
