How to bond a TPU 3D-printed part to fabric
Both halves flex, so the adhesive has to flex too. A flexible contact adhesive bonds TPU to fabric without the hard edge that makes a rigid glue tear the textile beside it.
The short answer
Abrade the TPU lightly, apply a flexible contact adhesive to both the print and the fabric, let both go touch dry and press them together. TPU and fabric both stretch, so a rigid adhesive creates a stiff patch and the fabric tears along its edge. For anything that will be washed or take real load, stitch through the joint as well and let the adhesive act as a seal rather than the structure.
- Difficulty
- Moderate
- Time needed
- 30 minutes work, 1 hour before careful use, 24 hours before washing
- What you need
- Flexible contact adhesive, 220 grit abrasive, isopropyl alcohol, small brush, roller, needle and strong thread for stitching
TPU is a thermoplastic elastomer, which means it is flexible, chemically fairly resistant and low in surface energy. That combination makes it awkward to bond. Most rigid adhesives either will not wet it or make a hard spot that defeats the point of using a flexible material. A flexible contact adhesive, of the sort used in shoe repair, is the right family.
Fabric brings the opposite problem: it is porous, so adhesive soaks in and stiffens the weave. Applied thinly that is a small penalty, applied thickly it turns a soft textile into a board. Two thin coats work better than one heavy one, and the second coat is mostly there because the first one soaks in.
Printed TPU has a layered surface which actually helps the mechanical key once it is lightly abraded. Keep the abrasion light, because TPU tears easily if you dig into it.
For anything that will be laundered, treat adhesive as a backup. Repeated wash cycles with heat and detergent will work at any adhesive bond to a textile, and stitching is what keeps it together.
Step by step
- Abrade the bonding face of the TPU print lightly with 220 grit, just enough to dull it.
- Wipe the TPU with isopropyl alcohol and let it dry.
- Make sure the fabric is clean, dry and free of any fabric softener residue.
- Brush a thin coat of flexible contact adhesive onto the fabric and let it soak in, then add a second thin coat.
- Brush one thin coat onto the TPU.
- Wait until both faces are touch dry, usually 10 to 15 minutes.
- Press the two together firmly, working from one edge, and roll the joint down.
- If the joint takes load or will be washed, stitch round it once the adhesive has set.
What to avoid
Do not use cyanoacrylate or epoxy. Both cure hard and the fabric tears along the edge of the patch.
Do not flood the fabric with adhesive. It soaks through and leaves a stiff board with a visible outline.
Do not join the faces while the adhesive is wet. A contact adhesive needs to flash off first.
Solvent-based contact adhesives are flammable and strong smelling, so use them in a ventilated space and wear gloves. Test on an offcut of the fabric first, because many adhesives stain or darken textiles permanently and some soak through thin fabric to the visible face.
