Gluing Vinyl

Vinyl flooring, wraps, upholstery covering and signage film.

Also called LVT, vinyl flooring, vinyl wrap.

How Vinyl behaves when you bond it

Like flexible PVC, plasticisers migrate out over time and can soften an adhesive that seemed fine at first. Flooring vinyl also has a wear layer that behaves nothing like the backing.

Vinyl in flexible sheet, upholstery and flooring is usually plasticised PVC, often combined with a wear layer, print, backing or fabric reinforcement. Plasticiser migration can soften an otherwise compatible adhesive, so the exposed layer and long-term flexibility matter.

Surface preparation

Confirm which face is being bonded and whether it is plasticised PVC. Clean and dry it; Permabond permits isopropanol or Cleaner A and warns that acetone is too aggressive for its PVC process. Test for colour change and plasticiser migration, and use a flexible adhesive explicitly rated for the vinyl grade.

Which adhesives work on Vinyl

Good

Contact adhesive

Contact adhesive is rated good for this material as an application-level assessment, not as a blanket manufacturer claim. Suitability still depends on the other substrate, joint design and service environment.

Good

Flexible fabric adhesive

Flexible fabric adhesive is rated good for this material as an application-level assessment, not as a blanket manufacturer claim. Suitability still depends on the other substrate, joint design and service environment.

Conditional

Cyanoacrylate

Cyanoacrylate is rated conditional for this material as an application-level assessment, not as a blanket manufacturer claim. Use only after a product-specific test on the actual grade and joint.
