Gluing Melamine faced board

Chipboard or MDF faced with cured melamine-resin decorative paper.

Also called flatpack furniture, melamine, MFC, white board.

How Melamine faced board behaves when you bond it

A speciality melamine adhesive can bond the non-porous face to a porous wood or composite surface. Small fittings may suit a tested cyanoacrylate. General adhesives become conditional when both faces are sealed because water or solvent may have no escape route, and because glossy surfaces provide little mechanical key.

Melamine-faced board has a porous wood-particle or fibre core covered by a hard, sealed thermoset-resin face. The face and a cut edge are different substrates. Ordinary wood glue can enter the exposed core but cannot penetrate the intact melamine surface.

Surface preparation

Mark whether each bond area is melamine face, exposed core or edge banding. Remove dust, grease and polish and let the surface dry. Wilsonart 3330 requires at least one porous side and clean, dry surfaces. Where the chosen adhesive permits abrasion, key only the hidden bond area to an even matt finish and remove the dust. Do not sand through the thin decorative layer. Test adhesion on an offcut because texture and release residues vary.

Which adhesives work on Melamine faced board

Good

Cyanoacrylate

3M reports substrate failure in ambient overlap-shear tests on melamine with its instant wood adhesives. This supports selected products for small close-fitting joints, not broad panels or every melamine texture.

Conditional

Two-part epoxy

Epoxy can form a local bond to a clean, keyed melamine face, but performance depends on the particular surface texture and finish. Abrade only the hidden bond area, clean it and test an offcut before relying on the joint.

Abrade the surface first.

Poor

PVA wood glue

Ordinary PVA wood glue cannot penetrate an intact melamine face. A speciality melamine adhesive can work where one side is porous, but Wilsonart 3330 is an acrylic emulsion system and must not be treated as proof for general PVA wood glue.

Abrade the surface first.
