Gluing Laminate

High-pressure decorative laminate used for worktops, tabletops and fitted furniture.

Also called Formica, HPL, kitchen worktop, worktop laminate.

How Laminate behaves when you bond it

Contact adhesive is the established choice for full-area HPL-to-board lamination because both faces are coated and pressure is applied across the sheet. Selected cyanoacrylates can bond small HPL parts. Structural adhesives can work on keyed laminate, but a glossy face must be cleaned and usually abraded, and a small test is needed because release agents and surface treatments vary.

High-pressure laminate, or HPL, is made from resin-impregnated paper consolidated under heat and pressure. The decorative face is hard, smooth and non-porous, while the factory-sanded back is made for lamination. A repair made to the decorative face is therefore different from bonding a new sheet by its prepared back.

Surface preparation

Decide whether the bond is to the sanded back or the decorative face. Keep both surfaces clean, dry and dust-free. Remove oil or dirt with the cleaner permitted by the adhesive and laminate makers. For contact adhesive, coat both surfaces uniformly, allow the stated dry or open time, position once and apply firm pressure over the whole area. For a glossy face and structural adhesive, clean, abrade to an even matt key, clean again and test for visible damage.

Which adhesives work on Laminate

Excellent

Contact adhesive

3M PB920-Plus is explicitly designed for decorative laminate to particleboard, and Fastbond 30-NF gives application instructions for HPL. Full-area coating and uniform pressure are essential because contact adhesive cannot be repositioned after the faces meet.

Good

Cyanoacrylate

3M reports substrate failure in HPL overlap-shear tests for three instant wood adhesive viscosities. This supports small close-fitting parts; it does not make cyanoacrylate suitable for full worktop lamination.

Good

Two-part epoxy

3M's structural-adhesive preparation guide says thermoset laminates can usually be bonded after removal of soil and release agent, with abrasion recommended for glossy surfaces. Use epoxy for local structural bonds, not as an unqualified substitute for a laminate contact process.

Abrade the surface first.
