Gluing Chrome plated metal

Chrome plated bathroom fittings, trim, tube and hardware.

Also called chrome, chromed.

How Chrome plated metal behaves when you bond it

Hard, mirror-smooth and specifically finished to be easy to wipe clean, which is exactly what makes it hard to bond. Abrading solves the adhesion problem but ruins the finish, so the decision is often cosmetic rather than technical.

Chrome-plated metal presents a hard, smooth decorative chromium surface over nickel and base metal. Adhesion is limited by polish, contamination and plating integrity; abrasive preparation improves key but permanently mars the finish.

Surface preparation

Degrease with a cleaner compatible with the plating and dry with lint-free materials. If the finish may be sacrificed, lightly abrade a hidden area and clean again; otherwise use a thin tested tape or adhesive and accept lower structural confidence. Reject blistered, flaking or corroded plating.

Which adhesives work on Chrome plated metal

Good

Structural acrylic

Structural acrylic is rated good for this material as an application-level assessment, not as a blanket manufacturer claim. The prepared surface must be sound and consistently keyed where the finish permits. Suitability still depends on the other substrate, joint design and service environment.

Abrade the surface first.

Good

Two-part epoxy

Two-part epoxy is rated good for this material as an application-level assessment, not as a blanket manufacturer claim. The prepared surface must be sound and consistently keyed where the finish permits. Suitability still depends on the other substrate, joint design and service environment.

Abrade the surface first.

Conditional

Acrylic foam tape, VHB type

Acrylic foam tape, VHB type is rated conditional for this material as an application-level assessment, not as a blanket manufacturer claim. The prepared surface must be sound and consistently keyed where the finish permits. Use only after a product-specific test on the actual grade and joint.

Abrade the surface first.
