Gluing Chipboard
Wood-particle board used for furniture carcasses, flooring and laminate substrates.
Also called flooring chipboard, particle board, particleboard.
How Chipboard behaves when you bond it
Water-based wood glue works well on sound chipboard joints that can be clamped, including suitable tongue-and-groove flooring systems. Contact adhesive suits broad lamination where immediate full-area contact is needed. Low-viscosity adhesives can soak into edges and starve the joint, and concentrated loads should be spread over more area rather than relying on a harder adhesive.
Chipboard, also called particleboard, is made from wood particles bonded under pressure with resin. Its faces and especially its cut edges are porous and dusty. The board's internal tensile strength is limited, so a strong adhesive can pull out wood particles while remaining attached to them.

Surface preparation
Make sure the board is dry, flat and structurally sound. Vacuum dust from faces and cut edges rather than wiping it into the pores. Use enough adhesive to wet the surface without flooding it; porous edges or contact-adhesive work may need a second coat after the first has dried as the product instructions state. Clamp or roll evenly. For pressure-sensitive tape, 3M requires the open particleboard surface to be sealed first to create a unified surface.
Which adhesives work on Chipboard
Excellent
Contact adhesive
3M PB920-Plus is designed for decorative laminate to particleboard. Porous faces and edges may need a second coat after the first becomes tacky, and uniform pressure is required across the assembly.
Good
Cyanoacrylate
3M reports substrate failure in ambient particleboard overlap-shear tests with its instant wood adhesives. Low-viscosity grades may soak into the board, so the selected viscosity and amount must prevent a starved joint.
Good
PVA wood glue
Wood-glue systems suit sound, porous chipboard joints that can be held while drying. EGGER directly specifies its D3 adhesive for tongue-and-groove joints in structural chipboard flooring, but that product statement does not verify every PVA product or wet-service use.
