Adhesive type
Anaerobic adhesive, threadlocker and retainer
Cures only in the absence of air between close-fitting metal parts. Made for threads, bearings and shafts, not for general bonding.
Also sold as threadlocker, retaining compound, flange sealant, thread sealant.
Anaerobic adhesive is usually a one-part methacrylate liquid that stays uncured while exposed to air but polymerises when confined between close-fitting metal surfaces. Metal ions help trigger the reaction. That is why threadlocker cures inside an assembled nut and bolt but a spill on the bench may remain liquid. It is also why cure is slower on passive metals such as stainless steel, plated parts and aluminium, especially when cold. An activator can help, but it may shorten working time and change final performance. The family includes low, medium and high-strength threadlockers, cylindrical retaining compounds, flange sealants and pipe-thread sealants. They are not interchangeable. Choose the grade by gap, viscosity, strength and whether later dismantling is required. Anaerobic products suit metal fasteners, bearings, bushes, shafts and rigid metal flanges. They do not cure properly in a wide open gap, on most plastics or between non-metal faces unless the system is designed and activated for that use. Some can attack or stress-crack susceptible plastics. Oil-tolerant does not mean that a visibly greasy joint needs no cleaning. Remove loose oil and dirt when you can. Full cure is usually much slower than fixture, so do not pressure-test or fully load the assembly at the first sign of handling strength.

What it is for
Locking metal nuts and bolts against vibration; retaining bearings, gears, pulleys and bushes on shafts; sealing rigid machined flanges; sealing compatible metal pipe threads; filling small clearance in cylindrical metal assemblies.
Where it falls down
Bad for large gaps, flexible joints, timber, glass and general plastic bonding. Cure can be slow on passive or plated metals, dirty parts and cold assemblies. High-strength grades may require heat for dismantling. Excess outside the joint may stay liquid. Some grades are unsuitable for oxygen systems, strong oxidisers or certain plastics.
Getting a good bond
Clean dirt, loose corrosion and heavy oil. Dry solvent cleaner before assembly. Check the maximum gap and metal activity in the TDS. Use the specified activator on passive metal or at low temperature when required, and allow its carrier to evaporate. Apply enough to wet the engaged threads or cylindrical area, assemble promptly and do not disturb before fixture.
Safety
Uncured anaerobic methacrylate adhesives can irritate skin, eyes and airways and may cause allergic skin sensitisation. Avoid repeated skin contact and vapour or mist from bulk dispensing. Contaminated work clothing can carry uncured material. Many formulas are harmful to aquatic life, so do not wash bulk residue into drains. Cured adhesive may release irritating decomposition products if heated for disassembly. Follow the specific SDS and the hot-work controls for the assembly.
Materials it suits
| Material | Suitability | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Copper | Excellent | Copper is a reactive metal for anaerobic cure. This family is suited to confined metal joints such as threads, retainers and flanges, but not to an exposed, wide bond line where oxygen remains present. |
| Mild steel | Excellent | Anaerobic adhesive, threadlocker and retainer is rated excellent for this material as an application-level assessment, not as a blanket manufacturer claim. The prepared surface must be sound and consistently keyed where the finish permits. Suitability still depends on the other substrate, joint design and service environment. Abrade first |
| Brass | Good | Anaerobic adhesive, threadlocker and retainer is rated good for this material as an application-level assessment, not as a blanket manufacturer claim. The prepared surface must be sound and consistently keyed where the finish permits. Suitability still depends on the other substrate, joint design and service environment. Abrade first |
| Stainless steel | Good | Anaerobic adhesive, threadlocker and retainer is rated good for this material as an application-level assessment, not as a blanket manufacturer claim. The prepared surface must be sound and consistently keyed where the finish permits. Suitability still depends on the other substrate, joint design and service environment. Abrade first |
